Privacy Policy

MakeTheDonation helps businesses raise money for nonprofits at checkout. This policy explains what information we collect to do that, how we use it, and what we never do with it. It is written to be read, not skimmed past.
What we collect
Account information. When a business or nonprofit creates an account we collect the basics: your name, organization name, email address, and for nonprofits a profile that includes your EIN, description, payment instructions, and optional details like a logo, website, phone number, and location.
Point-of-sale connection data. When a business connects its point of sale, the provider gives us an access token and identifiers for the connected account. Tokens are stored encrypted and used only to run your donation program.
Transaction totals. To compute donations, your provider sends us order and payment events: amounts, refunds, and the line items needed to recognize a donation. We never receive or store card numbers or any payment credentials. Your customers are not identified to us.
Support messages. If you write to us through the Support button or by email, we keep the message so we can answer it.
Cookies. We use session cookies to keep you signed in. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party trackers.
How we use it
To total donations from your sales, produce monthly statements, show your dashboard or portal, send the emails the service needs (statements, review updates, password resets), and answer your support messages. That is the list.
What we share
Between businesses and nonprofits. A nonprofit sees the names of the businesses raising for it and their donation totals. A business sees its chosen nonprofit's profile and payment instructions. That visibility is the product.
On public pages. A nonprofit's public page can list its participating businesses. Nonprofits control this from their profile and can turn the listing off.
Service providers. We run on cloud hosting and use an email delivery service. They process data for us and for no other purpose.
Never. We do not sell your information, rent it, or share it with advertisers or data brokers.
Retention and deletion
We keep records while your account is active, and keep statement history so both sides of a donation hold the same record. If you disconnect your point of sale or uninstall our app, the connection's access token is revoked or discarded. To delete your account and its data, email contact@makethedonation.com and we will handle it. Where a provider sends us a formal data-deletion request (for example through Shopify's privacy webhooks), we honor it.
Security
Provider tokens are stored encrypted, traffic is served over HTTPS, webhook deliveries are signature-verified, and passwords are hashed. No system is perfect, but we treat your data like it funds a mission, because it does.
Children
MakeTheDonation is for businesses and nonprofit organizations and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from them.
